How to Make Witches Black Salt for Protection

Black Witch’s Salt is a useful tool in the collection of magickal and ritual tools since it is commonly used for spell work, protection, breaking hexes and bindings, purification, negative energy absorption, and repelling unwanted people. Black Salt (not to be confused with Black Salt from Indian cuisine) is used by Pagans, Witches, Wiccans, Voodoo and Hoodoo practitioners for its extremely protective properties.

You can place it just about anywhere – in the home, the office, in your prayer circle, etc. – and its objective is to drive away those who would do you harm (physically or spiritually).

Black Salt offers the added benefit of being able to make it yourself. You only need a few key ingredients, which you then combine to create something powerful and protective. You can always buy pre-made Black Salt from our shop if you do not have time or materials to make some yourself. It is still a great option to make it yourself if you are able, as with everything else.

How to Make Witches Black Salt for Protection

Here is a printable recipe to make black salt for protection and absorbing negative energies. I have also shared a YouTube video below showcasing some (optional) additional herbs that you can add to enhance the intention of your black salt.

Ingredients

  • Salt (preferably, Sea Salt)

  • Black Pepper

  • Ritual Ashes (from incense, sage, or other herbs)

  • Activated Charcoal Powder

  • Optional
  • Cast Iron Cauldron shavings (instead of Pepper)

Directions

  • Start by grinding your black pepper and sea salt to your desired consistency, if you wish. The texture of your concoction is entirely up to you.
  • Combine by mixing equal amounts of black pepper and sea salt together.
  • Add in your ritual ash to your mixture.
  • Slowly small amounts of activated charcoal powder until desired shade of black is reached.

Ways to Use Black Salt:

The Black Salt is ready to use once it has been thoroughly mixed. You may also set protective intent over the salt by invoking a prayer, chant, or setting of intentions.

It can be sprinkled along your household’s property line, across your threshold, or as a way to cast a circle. Sprinkle some under your bed, or keep it in a bowl under there, to protect you while you sleep.

Storing Black Salt:

Use a glass mason jar to store your Black Salt for later use, or put it in a glass/wood/stone bowl. Choosing glass/wood/stone over plastic is better for the environment, since it is more natural, while plastic releases toxins over time.

Disposing of Black Salt:

If your Black Salt has fulfilled its purpose, it is recommended that you bury it within your yard after 7 days of use. However, if you ended up using it for a hex or curse, then bury it in the woods far away from your home away from anyone or anything may accidentally stumble across it and become exposed to negative energies.

“[M]any Hoodoo and Conjure practitioners recommend burying it near a crossroads or even a graveyard. You can also toss it into moving water, like a stream or river. Make sure the water really is moving, though — you don’t want the salt just swirling around in one stagnant spot. Finally, consider disposal by fire. If you choose to use this method, however, be sure to take the ashes far away and bury them — don’t use them for later magical applications.“ Wigington, Patti.
